The Adventures of Cormac Payne!

Adventure 1.5, Session 4

Amsterdam, 1932 (Day 2)

JUSTIN 4:52 pm
When we last left off, Cormac and Eva were arguing with a Dutch policeman by the museum.

CHRISTIAN 4:53 pm
I’d asked for one of the police who was there that morning.

JUSTIN 4:53 pm
Waarom wilt u spreken met een politieagent?

STEPH 4:53 pm
I was standing by.

CHRISTIAN 4:53 pm
Why do you speak to a policeman?

JUSTIN 4:54 pm
Damn Google.

CHRISTIAN 4:54 pm
Don’t think the translator gave you what you were looking for.

JUSTIN 4:54 pm
Look, you don’t exactly speak Dutch either, so that’s what you think he’s saying.

CHRISTIAN 4:55 pm
You know, I’m taking the time to put my translated phrases back into English to avoid that…it only takes a moment.

JUSTIN 4:56 pm
The Dutch policeman is looking at you for a response.

CHRISTIAN 4:57 pm
“Ich war heute Morgen hier, während der Schießerei. Ich habe mor einformation für die Polizei.”
ugh, let me try that again.
“Ich war heute Morgen hier, während der Schießerei. Ich habe weitere Informationen für die Polizei.”
There you go.
Stupid spaces.

JUSTIN 4:58 pm
Echt waar? Ik zal mijn leider.
He motions for you to stay where you are, then walks over to another group of police

CHRISTIAN 4:58 pm
I will be my leader?

JUSTIN 4:59 pm
Apparently he is using the same company that supplies Afghan terps.

CHRISTIAN 4:59 pm
While he walks over, I’ll get out my phrasebook for handy reference.

JUSTIN 5:00 pm
OK. The cop is coming back with another cop, who has more shinies on his uniform.

STEPH 5:00 pm
“Maybe when this is all over you can help me buy one of those?”
*pointing at the phrasebook

JUSTIN 5:01 pm
Ja? U informatie?

JUSTIN 5:01 pm
The police captain is looking at you.

CHRISTIAN 5:02 pm
“Guten Tag. Ich war hier während der Schießerei … Ich war während der Schießerei stach, eigentlich. Ich wollte mehr Informationen an die Polizei über den Angriff geben.”

JUSTIN 5:03 pm
Oh? Wat wil je zeggen?
Steph, make a Perception roll

STEPH 5:05 pm
I rolled 9 I have 16

JUSTIN 5:05 pm
You see a man standing across the street casually observing you.

STEPH 5:06 pm
What does he look like? Is it one of the guys from earlier when we found Cormac?

CHRISTIAN 5:06 pm
“Ich kann Ihnen Beschreibungen der Komplizen und Informationen über ihre Motive und wohin sie gingen. Ich habe eine Menge von Informationen, so könnte es einfacher sein, zurück zu Ihrer Polizeidienststelle oder eine Tasse Kaffee.”

JUSTIN 5:07 pm
He looks in his thirties, with a jacket and tie. He’s either got a large forehead or a receding hairline, you can’t tell from here. You’re sure you’ve seen him from somewhere before but can’t place where.

JUSTIN 5:09 pm
The captain agrees and motions you to a police car
Are you going to go?

STEPH 5:10 pm
“Cormac, do you know that man watching us?” I try to casually point him out wihtout being to obvious.
*without

CHRISTIAN 5:11 pm
(to police captain) “Bevor wir gehen, kann ich bitte Sie um Ihre ID? Es klingt seltsam, aber es wird mehr Sinn machen, wenn ich Ihnen sage, diese lustige Geschichte über einen Krankenwagen.”
Do I need a perception roll for the guy?

JUSTIN 5:11 pm
Sure

CHRISTIAN 5:12 pm
10. Got it unless there’s a negative modifier.

JUSTIN 5:12 pm
The captain looks a little annoyed, but shrugs and pulls out his ID. It looks legit.

CHRISTIAN 5:12 pm
I meant for the guy Steph was talking about.

JUSTIN 5:13 pm
Oh. You also recognize the man from earlier. You remember seeing him at both the reception yesterday and the museum before the shooting.

CHRISTIAN 5:14 pm
The French cop?

STEPH 5:14 pm
“I know I’ve seen him before on multiple occasions, but I’ve never met him.”

JUSTIN 5:14 pm
No, he was wearing civilian clothes then too. You didn’t speak to him.

CHRISTIAN 5:14 pm
Well, nothing inherently strange about that.
If I was some random guy from the auction and shooting, I’d be standing around too, most likely.
I’ll remember his face.

JUSTIN 5:15 pm
OK. If there’s nothing else, the police captain motions for you to get in the car.

CHRISTIAN 5:15 pm
(aside to Steph) “He was at the museum reception and the shooting.”

STEPH 5:15 pm
“I’ve seen him before that.”

STEPH 5:16 pm
“small community I guess.”
If Cormas thinks it is safe to get in the car I will follow.
*Cormac

JUSTIN 5:17 pm
Well?

CHRISTIAN 5:17 pm
One second…checking my notes.

CHRISTIAN 5:20 pm

Lassen Sie uns gehen.”
I’ll motion for Eva to get in the car
And then follow her.

JUSTIN 5:25 pm
OK, they take you to the police station. I think we can safely skip over the resulting conversation. How truthful do you want to be, and is there anything in particular you want to omit?

STEPH 5:25 pm
I’ll get in.
“Where is he taking us?”
I’ll smile at the police officer

CHRISTIAN 5:26 pm
I plan to be completely honest and explicit.

JUSTIN 5:26 pm
He smiles back. Apparently the police department does not have a good dental plan.
Steph, same question?

CHRISTIAN 5:26 pm
You can pretty much recycle everything I told Fisher.

STEPH 5:27 pm
I can’t think of anything that I have to hide.

JUSTIN 5:27 pm
Steph, does your appearance give you any positive modifiers?

STEPH 5:27 pm
Yeah…

CHRISTIAN 5:27 pm
Only like +4.

JUSTIN 5:27 pm
OK.

CHRISTIAN 5:28 pm
Whoops..+6

CHRISTIAN 5:28 pm
Unless he’s gay.
Then it’s only +2.

STEPH 5:28 pm
That was all for me.

JUSTIN 5:28 pm
Ummm… ok.

CHRISTIAN 5:29 pm
How about some bonuses for my keeping his guys from getting shot?
You told me to remind you.

JUSTIN 5:30 pm
Well, the next three hours pass a lot faster than you thought they would. The police ask you the same questions over and over again. How did you know Van Meer? What were you doing there?
Why was Van Meer killed? Oh, he wasn’t killed? Then why not?

CHRISTIAN 5:31 pm
Wow, I actually have good answers for all of those questions.
That’s a nice change from previous characters.

STEPH 5:31 pm
I’m gonna sit back and listen to everything.

CHRISTIAN 5:31 pm
Do they at least call over to Uitgeest?

JUSTIN 5:32 pm
Yes, and apparently the trail went cold. You get the feeling that these cops are desperately looking for a lead.

CHRISTIAN 5:32 pm
Well, they have descriptions of the guys.
That’s something.
And they’ve got at least one set of fingerprints.
Maybe more if they recovered the first car.

JUSTIN 5:32 pm
They do, but in the absence of computers it will take several weeks to actually check them.

CHRISTIAN 5:33 pm
We gave them the maps and whatnot, so they could get some info off that as well.

JUSTIN 5:33 pm
After a while the police captain who brought you there interrupts the interrogators.

You know, assuming the room has a phone.

JUSTIN 5:36 pm
It does. The interrogators agree and the police captain offers to drive you back.

CHRISTIAN 5:36 pm
Does he have a name?

JUSTIN 5:36 pm
Captain Drees

CHRISTIAN 5:37 pm
Okay, I’ll shake his hand and bid him good day when we get out. What time is it?

STEPH 5:37 pm
I’ll smile and say goodbye.

JUSTIN 5:38 pm
It’s around 5pm

CHRISTIAN 5:38 pm
Great, not late for drinks yet.

JUSTIN 5:38 pm
He smiles back. If he’s gay, he’s faking it pretty well.

JUSTIN 5:41 pm
Well, if there’s nothing else Captain Drees drops you both off at the Hotel Europa.

CHRISTIAN 5:41 pm
“Well, no point waiting on the sidewalk. Let’s head in and see what we can figure out. Also, I need a drink.”

STEPH 5:41 pm
“I think I need a library.”
“can I meet with you in an hour or so?”

CHRISTIAN 5:42 pm
“Don’t go wandering around on your own. If I was the kidnappers and saw you with me, I’d probably already be planning on abducting you.”

STEPH 5:43 pm
“Well then maybe tomorrow first thing in the morning. I want to figure out what he was working on that could have been so important…”

CHRISTIAN 5:44 pm
“A dig in Africa.”
I’m going to head up to the front desk.

STEPH 5:44 pm
“Obviously, but of what? What did he find, and where did he find it?”

CHRISTIAN 5:44 pm
“Alle berichten die voor mij?”
(to Eva) “Artifacts most likely, and probably valuable ones if he’s been kidnapped.”

JUSTIN 5:45 pm
No messages at the front desk.

CHRISTIAN 5:46 pm
To the hotel bar then.

JUSTIN 5:46 pm
Make a perception roll

STEPH 5:46 pm
“Again, obvious, but why go through all the trouble of kidnapping him when they could just kill him and take whatever it was that he found?”

CHRISTIAN 5:46 pm
Both of us?

JUSTIN 5:47 pm
Or either one.

CHRISTIAN 5:47 pm
16, fail.
Steph?

STEPH 5:47 pm
I got 7

CHRISTIAN 5:47 pm
“Probably because they couldn’t just take it.”

JUSTIN 5:47 pm
You see a large man with a beard coming up behind Cormac

STEPH 5:48 pm
“Which leads me to the why. Also, I wonder if they got all of his research notes from before he left.”
“Cormac…” I point behind him.

CHRISTIAN 5:48 pm
I turn around.

JUSTIN 5:48 pm
It’s Dr Radichenko

CHRISTIAN 5:49 pm
“Владимир! Рад тебя видеть! Ты рано.”

CHRISTIAN 5:50 pm
“Let me introduce Miss Eva Wehrenberg.”

STEPH 5:50 pm
“Good evening Dr. Radichenko”
yet another smile

CHRISTIAN 5:50 pm
“Eva, this is Dr. Vladimir Radichenko.”

JUSTIN 5:51 pm
“Good evening Miss Wehrenberg.” He gives a big grin. You briefly contemplate opening a gold mine in his mouth.

CHRISTIAN 5:51 pm
“Eva, I’ve got to ask you to keep Dr. Radichenko entertained for a few minutes while I go put on a clean shirt.”
(To Radichenko) “Long story…not all the blood is mine.”

JUSTIN 5:52 pm
“Cormac, what the hell were you doing today?”

CHRISTIAN 5:52 pm
Can’t believe I forgot I was wearing a bloody shirt.

JUSTIN 5:52 pm
“Blood? I just assumed it was a winery accident gone horribly wrong.”

CHRISTIAN 5:52 pm
Probably got some interesting reactions from people.

JUSTIN 5:53 pm
Yes, you wondered about the curious look from the matre’de, but just chalked it up to snotty foreigners.

CHRISTIAN 5:53 pm
Wow, that first cop looks even more incompetent now.
“I’ll be back in a moment with an interesting story.”

JUSTIN 5:53 pm
(As does the Gamemaster controlling him)

JUSTIN 5:54 pm
“So can I buy you a drink Miss?”

STEPH 5:54 pm
“Well, Dr. Radichenko. How about you buy me a drink?”

CHRISTIAN 5:55 pm
Going to get a clean shirt and replace the three or four bullets from this morning.

JUSTIN 5:55 pm
You must have an interesting “To Do” list.

STEPH 5:55 pm
guess I’m not getting that drink then

JUSTIN 5:56 pm
“What do you drink?”

STEPH 5:57 pm
“Usually I don’t but when in Rome. What do you suggest?”

JUSTIN 5:58 pm
“Jenever is the traditional brand of ‘Dutch courage’ around here.”

STEPH 5:58 pm
Seriously if he says anything other than водка I’ll be surprised.
“How about I have whatever it is you are having.”

JUSTIN 5:59 pm
“Excellent! Barkeeper, two shots of grain alcohol!”

CHRISTIAN 5:59 pm
Time for some HT rolls.

STEPH 6:00 pm
14! I missed it by 4!

JUSTIN 6:00 pm
Well, it’s definitely not grain alcohol but it is delicious.
Very delicious.

STEPH 6:00 pm
“Maybe one more?”

CHRISTIAN 6:00 pm
Actually, you shouldn’t have to roll just yet.

STEPH 6:01 pm
that must mean that my second one fails miserably.

JUSTIN 6:01 pm
One more? I’ve had toast less toasted than you.

CHRISTIAN 6:01 pm
It’s a roll against the higher of HT or Carousing if you drink more than ST/4 drins in an hour.

JUSTIN 6:01 pm
OMG, you took the Carousing skill, didn’t you?

CHRISTIAN 6:01 pm
And there are tons of special rules.
-2 for an empty stomach.

STEPH 6:01 pm
I didn’t

CHRISTIAN 6:02 pm
Each failure shifts you down the line from sober to tipsy to drunk to unconscious.
A botch drops you two levels.

STEPH 6:02 pm
so she’s drunk?

CHRISTIAN 6:03 pm
No, what’s your ST?

STEPH 6:03 pm
10

CHRISTIAN 6:03 pm
So if you have more than 2.5 drinks in an hour, you roll.

STEPH 6:04 pm
Oh, well I’m fine then.
Another great experiment

JUSTIN 6:04 pm
Well, I guess you have more luck than most college girls.

CHRISTIAN 6:05 pm
3 drinks in an hour and you’ll get to experiment with the pink elephants and heaves special rules.

JUSTIN 6:05 pm
“So Miss Wehrenberg, how exactly do you know Cormac?”

STEPH 6:05 pm
“I really don;t. He works with my father. I was asked to acompany him fo the day.”
:-D for
*for…not smiley face
stupid keys

JUSTIN 6:06 pm
“Well, you should know Mr. Payne is a very … interesting fellow.”

STEPH 6:06 pm
“He speaks more languages than most people I’ve met. I’velearned that one very fast.”

CHRISTIAN 6:06 pm
I’d say that I’m back, but only a minute or so has gone by…I’m probably still waiting for the elevator. At least I’ll probably have it all to myself.

JUSTIN 6:07 pm
You just left.

STEPH 6:07 pm
“Also, he seems to know so many interesting poeple.”

CHRISTIAN 6:07 pm
I’m sure Steph’s character can tell where I am from the surprised screams of other hotel guests.

STEPH 6:08 pm
are there people running to the bar to get a drink?
talking about the man covered in blood.

JUSTIN 6:09 pm
Aside from his outfit being a wreck, he doesn’t look that bad. The police cleaned him up a little but he’s obviously disheveled.
The bar isn’t that crowded yet either. People are still drifting in.

STEPH 6:10 pm
My character has money right?

JUSTIN 6:10 pm
I’m trying to avoid money whenever possible (you have it, but I don’t want to play accountant). What do you want?

STEPH 6:11 pm
“Well, I know it is a bit out of custom, but the next drink is on me.”

JUSTIN 6:11 pm
“But of course!”

STEPH 6:11 pm
I summon the bar tender.

JUSTIN 6:11 pm
“Yes, ma’am?”

STEPH 6:12 pm
“Two more of the same please.”

JUSTIN 6:12 pm
He serves you two more glasses

STEPH 6:12 pm
“So how do you know Mr. Payne?”

JUSTIN 6:12 pm
“We are … how you say … business competitors.”

STEPH 6:13 pm
“Competitors? What do you compete for?”

JUSTIN 6:13 pm
“We both work in collection of rare antiquities. He has his bosses. I have mine.”

STEPH 6:14 pm
“Ah, but still old friends it seems?”

JUSTIN 6:14 pm
“In this business, today’s rival is tomorrow’s friend.”

CHRISTIAN 6:14 pm
Nicky. GAGARRIIIIIIIIIINNNN!!!!!

JUSTIN 6:16 pm
OK, while Cormac screams at random people in the hall, Steph, make another Perception roll.

STEPH 6:16 pm
“That makes sense. It’s the same with my line of work too. Or it will be once I get hired.”

JUSTIN 6:16 pm
“What is line of work for you?”

STEPH 6:17 pm
“Science, Mathematical probabilities, Breaking down compounds and seeing where it takes us…you know that sort of thing.”
“But purely apllicable types of things. Not just theory. That’s what I love.”

STEPH 6:19 pm
“Don;t get me wrong I like digging too, and history.”
stupid semi-colon being all in the way
“What exactly do you do in antiquities?”

JUSTIN 6:21 pm
“If you are interested, I could see if there is job for you at our embassy.”
“We have all types of programs to sponsor young scientists and mathamaticians.”

STEPH 6:21 pm
“That would be wonderful except I don;t speak Russian…yet.”

JUSTIN 6:22 pm
“We have program for that too. I work at University of Leningrad. We have all kinds of Americans and Europeans come and work with us and by end of work they speak Russian like the Tsar.”
He immediately glances around him

STEPH 6:23 pm
Not anymore

JUSTIN 6:23 pm
“Pardon me. They speak Russian like Comrade Lenin.”

STEPH 6:23 pm
With no rolled R’s!

CHRISTIAN 6:24 pm
Almost as funny as “they speak Russian like Karl Marx.”

STEPH 6:24 pm
“I wouldn’t say no if you wanted to put in a good word or two for me.”

JUSTIN 6:24 pm
Make another Perception roll

STEPH 6:24 pm
“I can always give you my references and I was top of my class.”
13

JUSTIN 6:25 pm
The man who was staring at you by the crime scene is in the bar.

STEPH 6:26 pm
“Exucse me Dr. Richenko, but I think I am being followed.”

JUSTIN 6:26 pm
Cormac, also make a Perception roll.

CHRISTIAN 6:26 pm
Am I back yet?
9. Success.

JUSTIN 6:27 pm
You’re in the middle of changing your shirt when you hear a knock at the door.

CHRISTIAN 6:28 pm
Well, since my pistol’s already out, I’ll stand to the side of the door with the pistol pointed at it and call “yes?”

JUSTIN 6:28 pm
There is another knock.

CHRISTIAN 6:29 pm
Is there a peephole in the door, or is that a modern thing?

JUSTIN 6:29 pm
Not on this door.

CHRISTIAN 6:29 pm
Is there a chain?

JUSTIN 6:29 pm
Yes.

CHRISTIAN 6:30 pm
Okay, I’ll hold the barrel of the gun against the inside of the door, stand to the side, put my foot against the inside, and open it a crack.
This is going to be one dead maid.

JUSTIN 6:31 pm
There is a man in civilian clothes and a policeman standing in the hall.
“Mr. Payne?”

CHRISTIAN 6:31 pm
“Yes?”

JUSTIN 6:32 pm
“We are with the National Police and were hoping you would come with us and tell your story to our Director.”

CHRISTIAN 6:33 pm
“Of course. I’ll be with you in one moment. I’m just changing my shirt and checking in with my boss.”
Closing the door.

JUSTIN 6:34 pm
Something doesn’t feel right.

CHRISTIAN 6:34 pm
No shit.

JUSTIN 6:34 pm
That was your Danger Sense roll.

CHRISTIAN 6:34 pm
I beat my roll to it.
I’m turning on the sink and then calling Drees.

JUSTIN 6:36 pm
You hurridly close the door in their face before they can respond, walk into the bathroom and get the sink going.
You then walk over to the phone to call Captain Drees. You can’t get a connection.

CHRISTIAN 6:36 pm
Clever.
How about the front desk?

JUSTIN 6:37 pm
The phone is just dead.
There is another knock at the door.

CHRISTIAN 6:37 pm
Well, that simplifies the problem.

CHRISTIAN 6:38 pm
I’ll stand to the side of the door, unchain it, and, if it isn’t kicked in, I’ll fling it open and tell them to face the wall and put their hands on their heads.

JUSTIN 6:39 pm
Should I assume your pistol is drawn when you say this?

CHRISTIAN 6:39 pm
I already had it out.
If I can finally get the drop on your NPCs, perhaps bloodshed can be avoided for once.

JUSTIN 6:40 pm
Just checking. After the third knock you throw open the door to the surprise of the two men. Of course the gun in your hand is an even bigger surprise. It’s like having a birthday on Christmas.

CHRISTIAN 6:40 pm
I think this is about to become the Adventures of Eva Wehrenberg.

JUSTIN 6:41 pm
Both men slowly raise their hands and turn around.

STEPH 6:41 pm
The adventures of EvaWehrenburg getting kidnapped by mysterious man in the bar that she’s seen before.

CHRISTIAN 6:41 pm
“Lie on the floor, face down, keep your hands behind your head, and look away.”

JUSTIN 6:42 pm
I want to confirm this is in the hallway.

CHRISTIAN 6:42 pm
Yes, that’s where they were standing.

JUSTIN 6:42 pm
OK, they comply.

CHRISTIAN 6:43 pm
“Each of you in turn, reach slowly for your weapons and ID, then throw them down the hall. First the one on my left.”

JUSTIN 6:44 pm
Make a Perception roll

CHRISTIAN 6:44 pm
Taking an aim action.
8. Success.

JUSTIN 6:44 pm
OK, the man on the right slowly reaches into his pocket and pulls out a pistol. He tosses it aside.

CHRISTIAN 6:44 pm
“ID?”

JUSTIN 6:45 pm
He slowly reaches into his coat pocket and tosses out a wallet.

CHRISTIAN 6:45 pm
“Now you.”

JUSTIN 6:45 pm
“Mr. Payne, this is outrageous!”

JUSTIN 6:46 pm
The policeman also slowly reaches into his pocket and pulls out a revolver, before tossing it down the hall. He then repeats with a wallet.

CHRISTIAN 6:46 pm
“Maybe, but put yourself in my shoes. My phone is dead, I had no prior contact from the police on my phone, no messages waiting, a random knock at my door, and then no answer when I asked who it was.”
“And one instance with an impostor this morning that nearly killed me.”

JUSTIN 6:47 pm
“Mr. Payne this is a great misunderstanding. We are the police. All we want to do is ask you your story.”

CHRISTIAN 6:48 pm
“That’s another thing. The police already have my story.”

JUSTIN 6:49 pm
The two men both look at each other with worried expressions. Every plan has a moment that could be avoided by proper ORM. This is that moment.

CHRISTIAN 6:49 pm
“Which would be a reasonable thing for any actual police to know.”
“So tell me who you are and who you work for and I won’t kill you.”

JUSTIN 6:50 pm
Do you have any interrogation skills?

CHRISTIAN 6:50 pm
I might. Let me check.

CHRISTIAN 6:51 pm
No, but it defaults to IQ-5.
And I’ve got some modifiers.

JUSTIN 6:52 pm
Is it opposed? If so, what skill do they use?

CHRISTIAN 6:52 pm
Interrogation vs. their Will for each question.
5 minutes per question.
+3 for severe threats.
I could get +6 with torture, but I don’t plan to torture them.

JUSTIN 6:53 pm
In the hallway?

CHRISTIAN 6:53 pm
-5 if their loyalty is extreme.
Yeah, I figure anyone who stumbles on us will unfailingly call the police, which solves my problem even better.

JUSTIN 6:54 pm
OK, make your two rolls.

CHRISTIAN 6:54 pm
What’s the final modifier?
I mean, if they’re here they know I’m a killer.
And they couldn’t be at a position of greater disadvantage.

JUSTIN 6:55 pm
You get +5 to your rolls
Or rather, -5.

CHRISTIAN 6:55 pm
So a flat 0 then?

JUSTIN 6:55 pm
Since lower is better

CHRISTIAN 6:56 pm
“Okay, I’ve got your wallets, so I already have all the information I need about you, plus your fingerprints, but tell me who you work for or I’ll kill you right now in this hotel hallway.”
Huzzah!
5
I didn’t actually say the huzzah part.

JUSTIN 6:57 pm
So you passed by 7?

CHRISTIAN 6:57 pm
That was OOC.
Yep.
What did they get on their will roll?
roll(s)
?

JUSTIN 6:58 pm
OK. Tune in next week for the next exciting chapter in The Adventures of Cormac Payne!
